Hey Nate,

I'll have to study up on the reconstruction and the affects it had on southern families. You have to remember that I received a public school education from a north-central Connecticut town that prided itself on diversity and the high salaries their teachers received.

I guess as old Charlie Daniels says: "The Souths Gonna Do it Again".

MJB... on that Lee quote... we Southrons do heed his advice... we just remember what he said a few years after the quote you mentioned... once the reconstruction started Lee said, "If i'd known what I know now I'd have died at Appomatox with my sword in my hand."

Amen.

I've read about Lee's eventual abolitionist attitude. He definitely felt his state came before his country (which was a much more common attitude back then). In fact, that kind of attitude is more representative of the appeal of a republican form of government: State before fed.

Did you know that Lee was against slavery and freed his own slaves and took them on as hired help? He sided withthe south because he could not bring himself to fight against his own family and friends. It was really an impossible situaion for him and other southern miliatry officers.

This is a great post. I am from Mass. and grew up on the south shore in the 60's and 70's. Overall, it was a good childhood. Although growing up in an Irish Catholic neighborhood was not always easy. You talk about being mean, that certainly was true back then- and very racist as well. My fahter's family has roots in the Scottish settlements of North East Vermont, and I take some pride in that. I used to have some pride in being from Mass. but not anymore. I live in Wisconsin and many people see Mass. as crazy especially with the gay marriage deal. I also see Mass. as going in the direction of socialist-totalitarianis-fascism. The culture seems to think that gov't is the solution to every ill. THe first time I was affected by that was when I could no longer buy bb's for my air rifles. They passed a law that minors could no longer buy bbs or bb guns. That was under Dukakis. It was also at that time that the legislature made it illegal for victims of violent assault/crimes to defend themsleves. Overall, I am glad I don't live there now.
